Project Manager's Corner: The Moore Foundation Moves TMT Towards Completing Our Design Development Phase

Our goal is to be ready to construct TMT in 2009. A generous gift of an additional $15 million by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, to TMT partners Caltech and University of California (UC), has just been announced (Caltech, UC, Moore Foundation).  This makes it possible for TMT to complete the construction-ready design and to initiate industrialization of the production of several key components of TMT. The TMT team is most grateful for this recognition of the progress made in developing the TMT plan. Beyond grateful, our team is energized and is implementing the new activities made possible by this support.

A New Website and a New Look

Readers may have noticed that our website (http://www.tmt.org) has a new look. This facelift is a good marker for the new phase of consolidating and completing TMT design development. We hope that you will find navigation easier and that the new look is more enjoyable.

 

Cerro Tolar Site Testing Ends, Site Restored

The venerable Cerro Tolar remote site testing observatory that TMT has operated since November 2003 has completed its mission. We have enough data to compare this site with others and the data has been analyzed and the results show that Tolar is an excellent site. The observatory has now been dismantled, all of the equipment has been removed and the site has been fully restored. This marks an important milestone in our site testing program.

Science in the Era of TMT

"Science in the Era of TMT" was a flurry of scientific and technical discussion that attracted about 130 attendees from all over the world, and spread both information and enthusiasm for the Thirty Meter Telescope project. The open workshop was held in Irvine, California at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies July 23-25, 2007 and featured 40 talks and 6 posters by members of the astronomical community from both inside and outside of the project.
