Fengchuan Liu, the project manager for TMT, and Yuko Kakazu, the education, outreach, and broader impacts manager and scientist, gave a live webinar on Hilo on 16 May 2025 entitled, New Paradigm in Community Engagement in Hawai'i. In case you weren't able to attend and want to hear about how TIO staff are active in the community, we recorded it for you and you can watch it here.
The Thirty Meter Telescope is the only extremely large optical-infrared telescope in the northern hemisphere, with its preferred site on Maunakea in Hawai'i. Since the 2019 protest against TMT construction, the TMT Project has recognized past mistakes and embarked on a completely new path of community engagement based on respect, inclusion and community stewardship. We discuss our new vision and new team based in Hilo, Hawai'i. We have been listening and learning from the Native Hawaiian community, proactively reaching out to hundreds of Native Hawaiian people who protested against the Project. We describe our collaborative efforts with the community to build long-term trust and relationships.
We hope you enjoy learning about our engagement in Hawaiʻi.
