National Science Foundation Begins Environmental Review Process

The National Science Foundation (NSF) today issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and to initiate Section 106 consultation for a potential NSF investment in the construction and operation of the Thirty Meter Telescope. The announcement begins the scoping process for the EIS and the Section 106 consultation process.  Comments must be submitted by September 17, 2022.

Said Dr. Robert P. Kirshner, executive director, TMT International Observatory LLC, "The National Science Foundation’s Notice of Intent to Prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Initiate Section 106 Consultation starts an important environmental review process to engage the public regarding the effects of a potential federal investment in TMT on Maunakea. We encourage all community members to participate in this opportunity to provide input.”
