On May 08 2019, the India TMT team presented the TMT pavilion at “Vigyan Samagam”, the first global science exhibition in Mumbai. A scaled, animated model of the Thirty Meter Telescope, a gallery of posters, and informational material have been created for public outreach.
The Hawaii Supreme Court, by majority decision, today issued its opinion affirming the Board of Land and Natural Resources' decision to issue a Conservation District Use Permit (CDUP) for construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) on Maunakea.
Pasadena, 5 October, 2018 - The TMT Observatory Executive Software (ESW) has passed a key milestone and is now ready to enter final design phase. An ESW Preliminary Design Review phase1 (PDR1) was held at the project office on September 27, 2018. ThoughtWorks, ITCC and TMT Engineers presented the overall Executive Software architecture and operations concepts, as well as their updated requirements and technical use cases.
“This revolutionary system will significantly expand Keck Observatory’s scientific reach,” said Co-Principal Investigator Andrea Ghez, director of the UCLA Galactic Center Group. “KAPA will also serve as an intellectual springboard for the coming generation of extremely large telescopes. We are developing KAPA in partnership with the Thirty Meter Telescope, Giant Magellan Telescope, and European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) so they can be...
PASADENA (July 26-27, 2018)– The Thirty Meter Telescope Optics Group recently achieved a critical milestone by passing its Primary Mirror Optics System (M1S) final design review. The review board, comprised of international reviewers and observers from various institutions including ESO, ITCC, JPL, JWST/Ball Aerospace, KECK, NAOJ, NIAOT, and the TMTPO*, met at TMT headquarters in Pasadena.
PASADENA July 11, 2018 – The conceptual design of TMT’s Cryogenic Cooling System (CRYO) has passed its conceptual design review. Engineers from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (TIPC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) joined TIO engineers at the project office to present the system that will be used to maintain parts of TMT’s first-light science instruments at cryogenic temperatures of 77 K.
Work is moving forward on TMT’s Telescope Control System (TCS), which is responsible for the coordination and control of the various telescope subsystems, responding to commands received from the observatory control system and from expert user interfaces. A part of TMT’s India work-share, the TCS is technically challenging due to the large number of external interfaces and the need for efficient communication with many distributed teams from...
Members of the TMT Science Advisory Committee (SAC) met in Pasadena on April 9&10, 2018 for their quarterly gathering. SAC representatives reported on their respective activities for the TMT project and discussed top-level requirements for TMT’s suite of science instruments.
The TMT International Observatory (TIO) Board of Governors at its meeting this week deferred a decision on whether to continue towards building the Thirty Meter Telescope in Hawaii, or to consider the alternative in the Canary Islands.
Pasadena, March 16, 2018 - The conceptual design and scope of TMT’s Refrigerant Cooling System (REFR), which was executed and developed by a close Chinese-North American collaboration, successfully passed a recent conceptual design review. This system will be used to provide cooling to electronics enclosures mounted on the telescope structure. The system also maintains several TMT instrument enclosures at subzero temperatures to reduce thermal...
